I once worked with a wise friend who advised that every business trip must include at least a bit of the local sites and culture. Too many times I’ve travelled to a new city with the best of intentions and found myself back at the airport on my way home kicking myself. So what did I want to make sure I didn’t miss in Miami this week?
Outdoor dining! (no, that’s not us in the photo) We spend a lot of months indoors here in New Hampshire. And although I don’t even mind all the snow shoveling this winter has required, there’s absolutely nothing like the experience of a warm night breeze against the cheek while sipping a coffee or enjoying dinner under the stars. So last night, after another long day in the convention center, I said ‘good-bye to glam’ and exchanged my high heels for a pair of lavendar flip-flops. As the sun set and the moon rose, I went in search of that tropical al fresco experience.
How ’bout a delicious latte while meditating on the sounds of a burbling fountain? Fabulous! Followed by dinner at another cafe around the corner. Dining al fresco offers an endless parade of people-watching. And Miami seems to be a city of small dogs, too. As the hour got later, techno strains from the dance club behind us escalated. All too soon it was time to return to the hotel to get ready for a return home.
For now, outdoor dining’s an activity best left for the birds … for a while, anyway.

I just wrote to someone that all I hope to do in California is sit at outdoor cafes, drink coffee, and sketch.
And if that is all I do, I will be in heaven!
I got a chuckle out of this. You are so right – the only ones who should be eating outside at this time of year in New England are the birds! But it’s good to keep those warm weather outdoor dining thoughts in mind. Not much longer now – hang in there! 🙂

I’m with Robin, I also love that image. Oh, how I’d love to escape this winter, even if just for a few days, and it’s not even that cold where I live. I long for the sun and am very jealous of your al fresco latte! But I really can’t complain…. only 5 more weeks and I’ll be in Australia for a holiday!
