The second half of the summer residency (SNHU-MFA) was held at the Oceanic Hotel on Star Island, in the Isles of Shoals, off the coast of Rye, NH. My first thought as I stepped off the Thomas Laighton ferry was, “This is just like the setting for a Bobbsey Twins novel!”
Peeking around the corner towards Vaughan Museum (above) and the flowers at the entrance (below).
Old fashioned climbing roses and bubble-gum scented iris flank the front door of The Parsonage.
Nesting season for the gulls meant that this was as far as we could walk on the rocks that day. The males stand guard and dive bomb intruders. Best to walk with a stick held high, just in case.
Social solitude. Everyone is working on their book-in-process.
And after so much quiet, the rush to meal time. The social stimulation was an intense contrast to the windswept simplicity outdoors.

THis looks so wonderful, I didn’t know it existed. And love the Bobbsey twin reference. Exactly.
Freddie and Flossie and Bert and Nan could be lurking around the corner. What a gorgeous place. I want to go. Now.
Thank you Li for the photo tour! What a special spot to go to write, work, think, reflect, take gorgeous photos! So nice to be able to share your trip with you thanks! Beth
I’m with Frank. OMG!! I love your photography as always. I haven’t been to Star Island in like 20 years, but since I read those books about it last year I’ve been wanting to go. Now with your photos I’m checking the budget and the calendar!
Whoops. Fran. Sorry about that…
Jenny, Trudie and I are talking about a day trip to Star. Care to join us?
Incredible! “My Artful Life” indeed. Thanks for sharing. I’m ready to go to Star Island.
Let’s go!
Your photo journal is perfection…..I have always been a Bobbsey Twins fan, you had me from the first shot!
Toujours,
Robin
So glad you enjoyed this, Robin. I only wish TX were not so far away. Some day, New England?
OMG! Fabulous place, fabulous photos! You have whetted my appetite–I want to go there! What a wonderful experience, Lisa.
You totally can go there, Fran. A weekend day trip from Rye or Portsmouth.
