A Day of Beauty, or Saturdays are for Road Trips, part 1

Posted on August 24, 2011 by Lisa

What better way to celebrate the arrival of an out-of-town friend than to organize an all-day art tour? That’s what my friend Cynthia did, and Trudie and I were fortunate to be invited along. The day was full of many wow!s, beginning with a tour of C’s house and gardens, and an al fresco breakfast served…

How Nature’s Seasons Lead My Creative Activities

Posted on January 4, 2010 by Lisa

If being over 50 is about anything, it’s about being comfortable with who you are with grace and ease. Therefore, as much as I would like to say that the sight of heavy snowfall has me bounding to the coat closet for my boots, hat and mittens, with an eagerness befitting an avid snowbunny, alas…

Super-sized Serving of Wisdom and Inspiration

Posted on November 2, 2009 by Lisa

It was an action- and inspiration-packed week. And there was even another author event at Portsmouth’s Music Hall with Tracy Kidder, but I didn’t have the presence of mind to snap a photo. Ann Hood is the visiting author this year at Southern New Hampshire University. I totally loved her novel, The Knitting Circle and…

The house by the river

Posted on August 6, 2009 by Lisa

These images are from the amazing, jaw-dropping location of our class picnic last week. I’m trying to learn the special features of my Corel Paint Shop Pro and thought I’d take a stab at assembling a collage. It’s not as easy as the mosaic maker on Big Huge Labs, but I like the option of rectangular rather…

High-heeled Athletics Make for Good Entertainment

The guys in the dorm made up this game of TennisBall (the ball is a tightly matted wad of paper and masking tape). When they asked if I’d like to try my hand at it, I set down my bottle of Kombucha (a healthful fermented tea beverage that was first created in Tibet) and got…

Back to School: Dorm Life

Posted on July 29, 2009 by Lisa

Elements from home warm up my dorm room: vintage pillow case; polar fleece throw in favorite colors made by a dear friend; my latest knitting project (a comfort, even if I haven’t knit a single stitch this week); a handled basket that performs dual purpose as packing box and decorative item; the marmalade jar that held my…

Back to School

While my new alter ego, Fairy Girl, aka Clothespin Doll, nestles into the book shelf for a good summer read, I’m off to dormitory life for the next two weeks. It’s time for Summer Residency in the MFA program at Southern New Hampshire University. My second and final summer residency before graduating in ’10. So today…

When is summer going to make an appearance?

Posted on June 22, 2009 by Lisa

Work at the garden center has gotten sad with all of this rain.  We’re all wondering *when* the sun is going to show itself. Meanwhile, my heirloom Brandywine tomato plant (she’s an only child), charges forth, producing blossoms, promising fruit to come. All in spite of the gray days of June. I am encouraged!

Writing Journey – School Report #1

Posted on July 27, 2008 by Lisa

Sunday – day #3. Today we meet and spend the day with Anne Fadiman, our visting master writer. We are in our own bubble of writers and words here, in a beautiful New Hampshire mountain setting. There is even a fox den at the base of our dormitory’s hill, amidst a burbling brook and giant ferns. The momentum…

Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio . The prompt was painted blobs. Despite cat #1 looking like a jazzed up potato, I could not stop! At some point in the flow I got the idea to paint some of the cats of my childhood. In the winter we burned paper trash in the fireplace to supplement what served as central heat in our very old house on Nantucket. Our (many!) cats and kittens would join us, huddled on the bricks to warm themselves, too. This funny little painting feels like the beginning of that writing project a couple of friends have been nudging me to start. Here’s looking at you @dianelesbecquets and @bettinacaserta ! What a fun — and surprising — day of painting. #artforwellness #watercolor #cats_of_instagram #memoir

“A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, “A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, thread and memory bits and found objects. These four walls are an interpretation of my mother’s life experience. The cloth houses were a craft workshop project, intended as decorative objects. Hand stitching is like a silent moving meditation for me. The motion of the hand stitching was the spark that launched this piece. So caught up was I with the storytelling bug that I stayed up stitching until I had completed two of these ‘memoir houses’.

Drawing and visiting, visiting and drawing, celebrating her new book, “Nearly Native A Nantucket Story of Adoption, Love and Luck.” Not to mention our friendship that dates back to 4th grade, when my family made the island our home. We made stamps with pliable erasers and found impressionable surfaces on her patio to ink. The green ‘dots’ in first pic were made by pressing the putty eraser onto a decorative metal shelf.
