Modular Knitting Therapy

I finally got my own copy of Mason-Dixon Knitting by Kay Gardiner and Ann Shayne! Practically every project within is enticing, but I settled upon the idea of using up the leftover cotton from the Lizard Ridge afghan and trying my hand at Log Cabin. I love the geometry of modular knitting and Mason-Dixon is full of possibilities. Modular knitting offers the perfect balance between being interesting but not so intricate as to require a stitch chart. In other words, the perfect salve after a hectic day. What craft soothes your spirit?

Ahh.. I really have to learn to knit one of these days. A friend tried to teach me years ago but I never got past the first row.

Personally, I find origami really soothing, I think it’s something about the repetitive movements that is calming.

Funnily enough the other thing I love to do to relax is unpicking kimono, especially in the cold weather. I tuck myself under a nice soft blanket in front of some DVDs, pile a gorgeous kimono on my lap and carefully take it apart stitch by stitch. Knowing that it was originally sewn by hand (machines shouldn’t be used to sew kimono), I love the feeling of the history of the tailor. I also love imagining what the gorgeous fabric is going to be reborn as.

Love your blog Lisa! I’m not sure why this is only my first time reading it. I was writing about “Eating Clean” on my blog this morning so I decided to look you up. Great job! I look forward to adding this to my regular reading materials.
