Girls’ Getaway Weekend in Vermont!

zelda the stowaway

Packing involved multiple bags and containers. After paring down the arts & craft choices to just the Lizard Ridge afghan and my camera, the rest was easy: a giant jar of homemade vegetable lentil soup, a dozen fresh-off-the-farm eggs, a bar of dark chocolate, and my laptop. After throwing a few things into my French duffle, I’d only turned my back for a moment, but Zelda had enough time to wiggle in and declare herself a stowaway. I couldn’t say, “no” to that face — could you?!*

covered bridge in VT We stopped for lunch in Woodstock, Vermont. This is one of my favorite New England towns for walking, window shopping, and simply looking at all of the beautiful old homes that line Route 4. Thanks to a pause in the day’s rain, we walked over to admire the local covered bridge, too.

Our destination, Killington, is just a brief drive down the road from Woodstock. A group of us were gathering for a rare weekend devoid of family responsibilities, intending to hike, swim and relax. And, oh, talk!

zelda and fruit salad

Zelda helped E. with the fruit salad. (Don’t worry — she washed her paws first.)

killington books

On Saturday morning we made a stack of all of the (non-fiction) books everyone had brought and held an impromptu book review session. With all of the sidebar discussions that developed, I think the Killington Book Review took about two hours! I kept my bedtime reading, Evan Help Us by Rhys Bowen, out of the mix. A cozy mystery set in North Wales didn’t seem to blend with the rest of our heady material.

And during all of the conversations, book reviews, and in between meals, I worked my way through the finishing details of my weekend-project-of-choice.

After a fabulous weekend in the company of friends, I returned home with a completed Lizard Ridge Afghan!
