Spring has Sprung

Posted on April 25, 2011 by Lisa

My friend Beth has a flair for interior decorating. Her seasonal vignettes inspire me. The table always looks beautiful, set with lovely treasures and surprise goody bags for young and old. My contribution for this year’s Easter gathering was a variation on Kalyn’s Kitchen’s Chinese Napa Cabbage Asian Salad.  I skipped the cilantro and Sriracho…

A night of tea, tales, and touchstones

Posted on January 21, 2011 by Lisa

This month is our fifth anniversary. We are a small but energetic group of four writers with loads of other creative interests on the side. Sometimes drawing or painting or photography or gardening or sewing or knitting or cartooning takes center stage, and we come to the table with few words on paper to share….

Eating Clean is More Fun with a Friend

Posted on May 31, 2009 by Lisa

I love the idea of healing from within — with nutrition. So it’s always fun to visit one particular friend who is doing just that and making great strides with her health. Since purchasing a Vita Mix several months ago, she’s been whipping up all kinds of veg-fruit concoctions. Upon my arrival on Friday afternoon,…

I’m relieved that tomorrow begins a new week with a Monday. The new year celebrations of the past week, on the heels of a holiday-active December, really threw off my sense of time. And combined with the excitement of an in-person meeting with this author regarding her upcoming book that will include my work, I have felt the…

Holiday Baking, Part I

Posted on December 17, 2007 by Lisa

While New England laid its arms open to the second heavy snowfall in so many days, I was warm and cozy in my kitchen preparing for a restorative day of baking. I love to bake. Some people take up long distance running or meditation as way to unplug from the world. Me? I head for…

My own version of a Book Tour

Posted on November 10, 2007 by Lisa

Last week it was a public speaking gig all about “Online Marketing: Creating a Buzz” and this week it was an in-store opportunity to lay out my books for sale and offer customers a sample of one of Eating Clean‘s recipes. Remember my summertime job as “Artist in Residence” at the garden center, making up…

A Fantastic Friday

Posted on August 24, 2007 by Lisa

It’s way too hot for baking in the oven, but that doesn’t rule out my bread machine. Purchased during some sort of dieting frenzy when I saw it on TV being used to bake whole grain breads, it sat in my pantry unused for way too long. And then I tasted my friend’s homemade, whole…

Divine Buffalo Burgers

Posted on May 31, 2007 by Lisa

Measurements are approximate. I rarely measure anything when cooking (baking requires more precision) and I had no idea these were going to be delicious enough to publish the recipe! The meat I used comes from grass-fed, free-range New Hampshire buffalo. Buffalo is considered a lean alternative to beef and a heart-healthy choice. INGREDIENTS 1-1.5 lb…

Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio . The prompt was painted blobs. Despite cat #1 looking like a jazzed up potato, I could not stop! At some point in the flow I got the idea to paint some of the cats of my childhood. In the winter we burned paper trash in the fireplace to supplement what served as central heat in our very old house on Nantucket. Our (many!) cats and kittens would join us, huddled on the bricks to warm themselves, too. This funny little painting feels like the beginning of that writing project a couple of friends have been nudging me to start. Here’s looking at you @dianelesbecquets and @bettinacaserta ! What a fun — and surprising — day of painting. #artforwellness #watercolor #cats_of_instagram #memoir

“A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, “A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, thread and memory bits and found objects. These four walls are an interpretation of my mother’s life experience. The cloth houses were a craft workshop project, intended as decorative objects. Hand stitching is like a silent moving meditation for me. The motion of the hand stitching was the spark that launched this piece. So caught up was I with the storytelling bug that I stayed up stitching until I had completed two of these ‘memoir houses’.

Drawing and visiting, visiting and drawing, celebrating her new book, “Nearly Native A Nantucket Story of Adoption, Love and Luck.” Not to mention our friendship that dates back to 4th grade, when my family made the island our home. We made stamps with pliable erasers and found impressionable surfaces on her patio to ink. The green ‘dots’ in first pic were made by pressing the putty eraser onto a decorative metal shelf.
