More on Writing

Posted on May 26, 2009 by Lisa

Today is Tuesday and I’m back at it: staring off into space so that I might return to a time and place long past. And write about it. The people, the places, the events, and above all else, the emotions. It’s like taking that first cold ocean swim of the season — uncomfortable. So instead of…

Writing writing w-r-i-t-i-n-g

Posted on May 9, 2009 by Lisa

It’s the middle of the second semester of the MFA program, coming up on one year completed and half-way through to graduation. My professor is pushing me to bleed on the page. Sometimes it’s just more fun to open up the camera bag and take cute shots of my feline companion, Corabelle. She’s ready to…

Gratitude

Posted on September 9, 2008 by Lisa

If in the darkest hours, one can recognize gratitude, the whole world begins to look different. Brushing and braiding my neice’s hair on Sunday afternoon was just what I needed. That and a little puppy therapy.

I left my heart … at the seashore

Posted on July 6, 2008 by Lisa

Parting shot, Ogunquit, Maine.  After our week in Maine and a thorough departure from everyday routines, I returned home refreshed and creatively recharged. But I must admit that all day today I’ve been aware of a dull lovesick ache for the sounds and smell of the seashore. From the deck of our oh-so-rustic cottage, we could hear…

Sweet Nantucket Beauty

Posted on February 24, 2008 by Lisa

When my friend asked me to photograph her Nantucket home I was happy to oblige. The house she built is cute and quirky and charming and inviting. Keeping me company in the early morning as I walked the outdoors with my camera was her kitty and longtime companion, Tais. The bathroom features vintage tile rescued from…

Creative Sparks Extend to the Animal Kingdom!

Posted on February 23, 2007 by Lisa

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TZ860P4iTaM] I was introduced to Nora, The Piano-Playing Cat by a fellow feline fan. The time I’ve spent with YouTube has been limited to watching videos that feature friends dancing or their cute pets. But when I found myself positively snorting with delight while Nora played a ‘duet’, I began to wonder where…

Reality Entertainment: the Novel-writing Contest

Posted on January 15, 2007 by Lisa

There’s an online novel-writing contest and I want ‘in’. Actually, I’ve already calculated how many words I need to write each day, five days per week, to bring my current work-in-progress up to commercial fiction submission size by the March deadline. In the event that any of you are interested in joining in the fun,…

Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio . The prompt was painted blobs. Despite cat #1 looking like a jazzed up potato, I could not stop! At some point in the flow I got the idea to paint some of the cats of my childhood. In the winter we burned paper trash in the fireplace to supplement what served as central heat in our very old house on Nantucket. Our (many!) cats and kittens would join us, huddled on the bricks to warm themselves, too. This funny little painting feels like the beginning of that writing project a couple of friends have been nudging me to start. Here’s looking at you @dianelesbecquets and @bettinacaserta ! What a fun — and surprising — day of painting. #artforwellness #watercolor #cats_of_instagram #memoir

“A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, “A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, thread and memory bits and found objects. These four walls are an interpretation of my mother’s life experience. The cloth houses were a craft workshop project, intended as decorative objects. Hand stitching is like a silent moving meditation for me. The motion of the hand stitching was the spark that launched this piece. So caught up was I with the storytelling bug that I stayed up stitching until I had completed two of these ‘memoir houses’.

Drawing and visiting, visiting and drawing, celebrating her new book, “Nearly Native A Nantucket Story of Adoption, Love and Luck.” Not to mention our friendship that dates back to 4th grade, when my family made the island our home. We made stamps with pliable erasers and found impressionable surfaces on her patio to ink. The green ‘dots’ in first pic were made by pressing the putty eraser onto a decorative metal shelf.
