Eating Clean is More Fun with a Friend

Posted on May 31, 2009 by Lisa

I love the idea of healing from within — with nutrition. So it’s always fun to visit one particular friend who is doing just that and making great strides with her health. Since purchasing a Vita Mix several months ago, she’s been whipping up all kinds of veg-fruit concoctions. Upon my arrival on Friday afternoon,…

Green Lemonade – a raw detox beverage

Green Lemonade on Thanksgiving It’s all over the internet. There are how-to videos on YouTube. And my sister-in-law prepared a fresh batch for us yesterday. Absolutely delicious. And it’s transformed the health and wellness of a good friend of hers. The combination of lemon with apple (I’m told Fuji apples are the best because of…

Divine Buffalo Burgers

Posted on May 31, 2007 by Lisa

Measurements are approximate. I rarely measure anything when cooking (baking requires more precision) and I had no idea these were going to be delicious enough to publish the recipe! The meat I used comes from grass-fed, free-range New Hampshire buffalo. Buffalo is considered a lean alternative to beef and a heart-healthy choice. INGREDIENTS 1-1.5 lb…

Chicken Curry for Dinner Tonight

This recipe is absolutely delicious but alas, it is not terribly photogenic, so although I’ve been running wild with my digital camera, I’ll leave the visuals to the imagination. … The canned tomatoes and coconut milk may conflict with your “eating clean” specifications, but using them is a rule I choose to bend, in the…

Small world. Six degrees of separation. One thing leads to another. Any one of these cliches might apply to how I came to be the editor and writer for this new webazine: Eating gluten-free is most commonly known to bring relief for people with Celiac disease and gluten intolerance. However, the benefits of the gluten-free…

Winter Weekend Waffles

Posted on March 2, 2007 by Lisa

Sleet pinging against my bedroom windows woke me at 5:45 today. Another late-winter storm is here. I’ve been wanting to share my latest favorite waffle variation and this weather — the kind that makes me want to bake and stay cozy indoors — is the perfect opportunity. Before mixing the batter, I fill a creamer…

Dream Changes – A Kaleidoscope of Possibilities

Letting go of your first business vision, one that feels precious and close to the heart, can be daunting. My original inspiration to open a specialty foods retail store, offering legal sweet treats to calorie- and carb-counting dieters, came at a time when the weight-loss marketplace was ripe with dieters looking for sugar-free and low-carb…

Banana Bread – gluten-free, sugar-free

Posted on February 23, 2007 by Lisa

Banana bread is that kind of comfort food I associate with friends visiting for endless cups of tea, the days before dieting haunted me daily, and winter’s weather that I seem to free-associate with baking. 2 ripe bananas 2 eggs 1/2 cup grapeseed oil or applesauce 1/4 cup + 1 Tbs. buttermilk or kefir or…

Morning thread work has been a favorite way to sta Morning thread work has been a favorite way to start a day since I was a kid. My first sewing lesson was at age 4 or 5, when my Aunt Mary let me help hand stitch a flannel bed jacket for my new baby sister. My impatient grandmother tried to teach me how to knit when I was 5. The instructions didn’t stick but I figured it out on my own after falling in love with mini skeins of angora at the 5 & 10 store (remember those?!), and immediately went into headband production! One after another, all in garter stitch. For me, stitching in quiet solitude is a form of meditation. A perfect setup for the day. #embroidery #mornings

Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio . The prompt was painted blobs. Despite cat #1 looking like a jazzed up potato, I could not stop! At some point in the flow I got the idea to paint some of the cats of my childhood. In the winter we burned paper trash in the fireplace to supplement what served as central heat in our very old house on Nantucket. Our (many!) cats and kittens would join us, huddled on the bricks to warm themselves, too. This funny little painting feels like the beginning of that writing project a couple of friends have been nudging me to start. Here’s looking at you @dianelesbecquets and @bettinacaserta ! What a fun — and surprising — day of painting. #artforwellness #watercolor #cats_of_instagram #memoir

“A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, “A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, thread and memory bits and found objects. These four walls are an interpretation of my mother’s life experience. The cloth houses were a craft workshop project, intended as decorative objects. Hand stitching is like a silent moving meditation for me. The motion of the hand stitching was the spark that launched this piece. So caught up was I with the storytelling bug that I stayed up stitching until I had completed two of these ‘memoir houses’.
