Sunday Night Redefined: it’s a Dance

Posted on September 15, 2009 by Lisa

Last Sunday night a bunch of us gathered in a friend’s basement.  We loaded up the CD player and practiced our salsa, cha cha, rumba, east coast and west coast swing, and even the waltz, which is what ML and I are doing in this photo. Yes, my friend painted the Cat-in-the-Hat on the wall and the cute…

Dance as Metaphor

Posted on November 11, 2008 by Lisa

Learning to be a good Argentine Tango follower is about surrender. So in Saturday’s “Followers’ Workshop” we practiced exercises in trust (yes, gently tipping to the side or backwards or frontwards with our eyes closed, trusting that someone would break the fall), feeling our partner’s weight change and again, with eyes closed, being in tune…

About Last Night

The outfit’s half the fun. As much as I love the slower pace of New Hampshire, sometimes there’s no better alternative to Boston’s dance scene. Tango de los Muertos is an annual event that runs four days and attracts dancers from everywhere. I mean … everywhere!

A Starlit Night

Posted on February 7, 2008 by Lisa

This is one of my photos. However, if a scary “privacy alert” hadn’t come up, I’d have posted an official “Dancing with the Stars” graphic for this post. On Tuesday night we joined thousands of other fans for a fabulous Dancing with the Stars on Tour show in Manchester, NH. The hand-applied rhinestones on the more than…

Much of the day: Eating Clean book selling and food sampling event at my gym. So many people amazed and delighted that such a sweet treat as the Fruit ‘n Nut Spread indeed makes for clean eating and it’s delicious, too. Lots of activity, lots of chat, lots of fun. In spite of the high heels….

Kinesthetic Inspiration from my Yoga Mat

Posted on January 9, 2008 by Lisa

Although I dreamt of becoming a ballerina, our family’s move to an island 30 miles at sea put the kibash on my beloved ballet classes. Those were the days when I lived in my hand-me-down, oversized leotard, tights (they might have been oversized and previously worn as well) and a pair of Capezio ballet slippers with the…

Full Moon Influence

Posted on September 29, 2007 by Lisa

This morning I woke up reluctantly. It was another vivid dream, the third this week. Could it be the full moon? But that’s now gone by. Or maybe it was watching The Secret for the third time and spending time writing my revised affirmations. Or perhaps it’s simply a confluence of all of the past…

Argentine Tango, a New Focus

Posted on September 9, 2007 by Lisa

Since finding my way back to photography (thank you Julia Cameron and your book, The Artist’s Way) and enjoying a love affair with my digital SLR camera, I have discovered that I love photographing dancers dancing. A bit of a leap from domestic still-lifes or gorgeous garden blossoms. But a passion and subject of creative…

Meet Zelda

Posted on July 29, 2007 by Lisa

Allow me to introduce my new friend and housemate, Zelda. Yesterday I was fortunate enough to be included in Mimi Kirchner‘s first soft-doll workshop. She opened up her home to a small group of us, including a fellow blogger and Mimi fan. What a treat and privilege to see Mimi’s working studio up-close-and-personal! This was…

Morning thread work has been a favorite way to sta Morning thread work has been a favorite way to start a day since I was a kid. My first sewing lesson was at age 4 or 5, when my Aunt Mary let me help hand stitch a flannel bed jacket for my new baby sister. My impatient grandmother tried to teach me how to knit when I was 5. The instructions didn’t stick but I figured it out on my own after falling in love with mini skeins of angora at the 5 & 10 store (remember those?!), and immediately went into headband production! One after another, all in garter stitch. For me, stitching in quiet solitude is a form of meditation. A perfect setup for the day. #embroidery #mornings

Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio . The prompt was painted blobs. Despite cat #1 looking like a jazzed up potato, I could not stop! At some point in the flow I got the idea to paint some of the cats of my childhood. In the winter we burned paper trash in the fireplace to supplement what served as central heat in our very old house on Nantucket. Our (many!) cats and kittens would join us, huddled on the bricks to warm themselves, too. This funny little painting feels like the beginning of that writing project a couple of friends have been nudging me to start. Here’s looking at you @dianelesbecquets and @bettinacaserta ! What a fun — and surprising — day of painting. #artforwellness #watercolor #cats_of_instagram #memoir

“A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, “A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, thread and memory bits and found objects. These four walls are an interpretation of my mother’s life experience. The cloth houses were a craft workshop project, intended as decorative objects. Hand stitching is like a silent moving meditation for me. The motion of the hand stitching was the spark that launched this piece. So caught up was I with the storytelling bug that I stayed up stitching until I had completed two of these ‘memoir houses’.

We made stamps with pliable erasers and found impressionable surfaces on her patio to ink. The green ‘dots’ in first pic were made by pressing the putty eraser onto a decorative metal shelf.
