Feeling Connected and Inspired

Posted on August 27, 2025August 26, 2025 by Lisa

I love surrounding myself with an evolving collection of interesting resources, whatever the topic. After building a career in publishing that was not especially gratifying, I was on a quest to figure out how to build a work-life that would include my artistic self within a profession that offered a reliable means of support. Early…

How to Create a Modern Crafting Bee

Posted on August 26, 2013August 26, 2013 by Lisa

I haven’t read the Laura Ingalls Wilder Little House on the Prairie books in decades, but a happy memory that lives on is the image of women crafting, their hands busy with making things both beautiful and useful. The women are seated around a table, enjoying a break from regular routines as they engage in…

How to Wear a Party on Your Wrist: Make a Spiny Knotted Bracelet

Posted on November 29, 2009 by Lisa

It was a long time coming, but I finally learned how to make Stephanie Sersich‘s Spiny Knotted Bracelet. I’ve been admiring photos of her work and aching to learn how to make one of these ‘wearable parties’ forever. Her book, Designing Jewelry with Glass Beads, provides easy to follow instructions, complete with how-to illustrations. My…

Beads, Yarn and Friendship

Posted on November 14, 2007 by Lisa

My friend F. and I thought it would be fun to knit projects in parallel using the same technique. We’d both been itching to do bead knitting, so deciding on that was easy. We agreed to knit scarves. And there the similarities between us might end. As knitters, anyway. F. immediately threaded 150 glistening orbs…

A Perfect Morning

Posted on July 19, 2007 by Lisa

Today is Writing Group day! Our regular gathering of four writers only rolls around once a month and I love it and look forward to it. Excitement for the get-together spurs on more creativity. So, while the coffee (fresh-ground, water-decaffeinated shade-grown beans, in case you’re wondering) is dripping, I pull out my camera. It’s only…

Corners of My Home

Posted on June 13, 2007 by Lisa

I hope you’ll consider these mosaic snippets as an invite into my home. You’ve seen the beginnings of my garden — that outdoor-living-space-in-process, so I thought it was time to bring you indoors by way of my new camera. The toys may surprise you. In fact, they surprised me, too, when I realized how many…

Artist Date

Posted on April 14, 2007 by Lisa

Beaded rainbow, originally uploaded by lallennh.   This week’s artist date took me to a local bead shop, where I browsed and planned glass beaded bracelets. For now, I’m attracted to all-beads-glass, as opposed to stone or pearl. For the moment. That could change. And I’ve got a love affair going with flamework beads. One…

Thanks to @jonehallmark and @twohandspaperie I’ve Thanks to @jonehallmark and @twohandspaperie I’ve been introduced to paper cutting. Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio . The prompt was painted blobs. Despite cat #1 looking like a jazzed up potato, I could not stop! At some point in the flow I got the idea to paint some of the cats of my childhood. In the winter we burned paper trash in the fireplace to supplement what served as central heat in our very old house on Nantucket. Our (many!) cats and kittens would join us, huddled on the bricks to warm themselves, too. This funny little painting feels like the beginning of that writing project a couple of friends have been nudging me to start. Here’s looking at you @dianelesbecquets and @bettinacaserta ! What a fun — and surprising — day of painting. #artforwellness #watercolor #cats_of_instagram #memoir

“A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, “A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, thread and memory bits and found objects. These four walls are an interpretation of my mother’s life experience. The cloth houses were a craft workshop project, intended as decorative objects. Hand stitching is like a silent moving meditation for me. The motion of the hand stitching was the spark that launched this piece. So caught up was I with the storytelling bug that I stayed up stitching until I had completed two of these ‘memoir houses’.

Drawing and visiting, visiting and drawing, celebrating her new book, “Nearly Native A Nantucket Story of Adoption, Love and Luck.” Not to mention our friendship that dates back to 4th grade, when my family made the island our home. We made stamps with pliable erasers and found impressionable surfaces on her patio to ink. The green ‘dots’ in first pic were made by pressing the putty eraser onto a decorative metal shelf.
