Posted on January 17, 2013January 16, 2013 by Lisa

I had a little help during the … … sixteen-hour knitting marathon involved to get this blocked and wrapped for Christmas. and thoroughly enjoyed the making and gifting this year. Now I’m off to Vogue’s Knitting Live Event in NYC. Yipp-ee-i-ay! This is one of those things that’s been on my “List of Things to…

Sing a Song of Gingerbread

Posted on December 2, 2012 by Lisa

There’s nothing like having company over to motivate me to organize piles of books, discarded mail that needs shredding, fabric-waiting-for-a-project, and at this time of year, holiday catalogs that I feel as though I must look through at least once for fear of missing that great something. On the first Saturday every December a group…

New e-card says Thank You

Posted on November 23, 2012 by Lisa

A ‘thank you’ in words alone did not seem enough, so I embellished one of the vintage copyright-free downloads from The Graphics Fairy to accompany a little email note expressing gratitude for yesterday’s festivities. My brother Anthony is the co-founder of the pretty-darn-famous OTTO pizza restaurants. Yesterday he closed his Coolidge Corner (Brookline, MA) location and…

How to Reinvent a Life When You’re 84

Posted on November 7, 2012 by Lisa

I held her hand through the forty-five minute MRI scan of her brain and chest.  We had not shared such extended proximity to one another in decades. That afternoon she had crumpled on the sidewalk outside the senior center. After refusing medical attention, she was eventually lured into the ambulance by my cousin, who lives…

My Interpretation of the Gypsy Rose Blanket

Posted on September 24, 2012 by Lisa

Remember this garden-inspired basket of yarn stash? The transformation into a very different kind of flower bed has begun — one that will keep me warm and cozy while snuggling on the sofa with a good book this winter. The Gypsy Rose Blanket made by British crafter Adaliza is constructed with crocheted squares, but I…

There’s a Blanket in the Garden

Posted on September 14, 2012 by Lisa

Since the moment I laid eyes on Adaliza‘s crocheted wonder, Gypsy Rose, in Kristin Nicholas’ blog post, I was full-on in love, but working with wool in the heat and humidity of summer is not what I do, so I went a little wild and ordered a mountain of Kristin’s Julia yarn (discontinued but recently reissued as…

Studio Peek and new eCard

Posted on September 5, 2012September 4, 2012 by Lisa

This week’s eCard is a photo from my weaving studio a few years back. I love using other artists’ color palettes and seeing where they take me in my own work. The watercolor print card of summer peaches on a lavender tablecloth is still one of my favorites, and made delicious inspiration for the shelf-top…

Anatomy of a Craft Idea

Posted on August 22, 2012 by Lisa

Did you know that gladiolas are August’s flower? Perfect segue to today’s post. The handwoven shawl in the photos below all began with a single one of these, in a deep fuschia. The technical details are: the shawl is an 8-harness twill, woven with three different tones of pink warp threads (those vertical and threaded…

Dipping into the Sketchbook Archives to Get my Groove Back

Posted on August 17, 2012 by Lisa

This drawing and the two below dating back to my twenties, when I was a weaving student in western North Carolina and lived in an authentic log cabin that had been brought down the mountain by mule, in pieces, and reconstructed next to a brook and a stand of oak trees. And from my memoir, Girl…

Morning thread work has been a favorite way to sta Morning thread work has been a favorite way to start a day since I was a kid. My first sewing lesson was at age 4 or 5, when my Aunt Mary let me help hand stitch a flannel bed jacket for my new baby sister. My impatient grandmother tried to teach me how to knit when I was 5. The instructions didn’t stick but I figured it out on my own after falling in love with mini skeins of angora at the 5 & 10 store (remember those?!), and immediately went into headband production! One after another, all in garter stitch. For me, stitching in quiet solitude is a form of meditation. A perfect setup for the day. #embroidery #mornings

Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio Sunday painting session with @innerpeaceartstudio . The prompt was painted blobs. Despite cat #1 looking like a jazzed up potato, I could not stop! At some point in the flow I got the idea to paint some of the cats of my childhood. In the winter we burned paper trash in the fireplace to supplement what served as central heat in our very old house on Nantucket. Our (many!) cats and kittens would join us, huddled on the bricks to warm themselves, too. This funny little painting feels like the beginning of that writing project a couple of friends have been nudging me to start. Here’s looking at you @dianelesbecquets and @bettinacaserta ! What a fun — and surprising — day of painting. #artforwellness #watercolor #cats_of_instagram #memoir

“A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, “A Mother’s Story” told in four walls with needle, thread and memory bits and found objects. These four walls are an interpretation of my mother’s life experience. The cloth houses were a craft workshop project, intended as decorative objects. Hand stitching is like a silent moving meditation for me. The motion of the hand stitching was the spark that launched this piece. So caught up was I with the storytelling bug that I stayed up stitching until I had completed two of these ‘memoir houses’.
