Argentine Tango, a New Focus

Tango Dancers

Since finding my way back to photography (thank you Julia Cameron and your book, The Artist’s Way) and enjoying a love affair with my digital SLR camera, I have discovered that I love photographing dancers dancing. A bit of a leap from domestic still-lifes or gorgeous garden blossoms. But a passion and subject of creative curiosity nonetheless. My friends at the Argentine Tango Association of New Hampshire have graciously allowed me to attend their monthly milongas and try my hand at this new expressive medium. Capturing a momentary image of the dancers requires me to be at one with the music myself, not unlike dancing. The low lighting presents some challenges, the stickiest one being the delayed shutter release after focusing. An auxiliary flash would solve this, but for now I’d rather not have to invest in any more equipment.

You want to know one of my favorite things about dancing? The dress-up. Heels. A dress. Big earrings and a splash of perfume. And now? My camera bag, too.
